A family of Syrian refugees live in North London, each with different experiences of settling into their new community. Wafa lives with her husband and youngest son. She has not seen her eldest son in seven years, as he fled to Egypt, while the rest of the family went to Lebanon.
Throughout the documentary we piece together what their lives before the civil war against what their lives today and how each has adjusted to their new status of ‘refugee’. Each member of the family has a unique point of view about their new circumstances. The film is a meditation on family, humanity, and acceptance of circumstances that are beyond one’s control.

Layla (2019)
Relocated to the seaside town of Margate, Kent, Layla is a 60-year-old Syrian refugee, who balances working the sweetshop at the local funfair with looking after her young granddaughter. Unable to build relationships with the British population around her, she finally makes a connection with a young boy, Femi, who teaches her to skateboard.
A late-in-life, coming-of-age drama and an examination of migrant culture in the UK, the film stars Wafa al Shalati as Layla and Ritaj Mdalal as Ritaj, both themselves refugees who arrived in the UK from Syria in 2016. 'Layla' is their first role.
Layla is currently being developed further with early development funding awarded by the BFI.
